SAM Tech Is Teaching The Most Advanced CNC Automotive Machining

Computer Numerically Controlled Machining Centers (CNC) are now the most widely implemented form of advanced machine shop practices and manufacturing today. The School of Automotive Machinists & Technology (SAM Tech) has taken the lead with its CNC machining curriculum that qualifies graduates to be capable of understanding and performing CNC programming and machining operations.

The SAM Tech CNC class designed and fabricated pieces for this crew module mock‐up, which is used in spacecraft design and astronaut training as part of NASA’s first crewless Orion flight.

These CNC program objectives include both classroom and hands-on lab instruction. The primary emphasis of this program are CNC machining techniques related to performance of cylinder heads and engine blocks, but there are more.

For more than 18 months, SAM Tech’s CNC classes have been working hand in hand with NASA engineers, staff, and even astronauts designing and fabricating a shoulder bolster for the Orion spacecraft. This Orion spacecraft seat system provides critical protection to the crew during launch and landing.

Students will study the utilization of 5-Axis CNC machining centers as well as using measuring machine digitizing hardware. All CNC curriculum is accomplished through class time with software applications, interfacing, and hands-on operation, creating final machine work.

Popular CNC machining equipment within the industry is used to hone technical skills, techniques, and hands-on learning to become proficient in a career within the racing industry. Workpiece preparation will be covered in detail, and special emphasis will be given to modifying high-performance and racing engine components.

Just some of the name-brand equipment within the SAM Tech learning center include:

  • Haas 5 Axis CNC Machining Center
  • Haas 3 Axis CNC Mill
  • Haas 5 Axis CNC Machining Center
  • Takumi 3 Axis CNC Mill
  • Haas Rotary Table
  • Haas Tooling Block System
  • Haas 8” 3-Jaw Chuck
  • Haas Control Simulator Module
  • Faro 1 FaroArm Platinum 7-Axis Measurement Arm
  • Faro 1 Laser Line Probe
  • Faro 1Portable Tripod
  • Faro 1 Granite Rolling Cart
  • Plus, much more computer equipment and popular computer software

In today’s work environment, a career in automotive machining is a well-paying job that is in high demand. SAM Tech has been recognized as a school of excellence by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC.)

SAM Tech graduates work for engine builders, championship race teams, and others across the motorsports industry. Their graduates step directly into the racing industry with employers throughout the country.
