The fuel quality in your engine’s tank is critical. Using a fuel without the correct octane or using a fuel that has been contaminated can be disastrous. We met with the guys over at Race Gas here at the 2021 PRI show in Indianapolis to find out just how critical it is. In fact, they have a way to make generic fuel at the pump be exactly what you want.
Race Gas’ Dan Muldowney met with us and took us back to the beginning of Race Gas and how it came to be. “Back 15 years ago, I used to road course race a Porsche. I went to a race where they were selling 110 octane fuel and I thought, sure, okay. It was the right color, the right smell, everything,” Dan said. “What they didn’t mention was that this fuel had been sitting in the ground all winter. Therefore, that moisture ended up in the engine and it cost me three pistons.”
After this, and a catastrophic failure of another engine, Dan searched for ways to field test the octane of fuel but it didn’t exist. “There was no way for me to do this kind of testing. I took my problem and turned it the other way and tried to figure this out. Okay, how do I figure out what I’m putting in my tank and how do I make sure it’s what I want?” he said. ” Long story short, I spent five years researching the constituents of gasoline and found a formula that will match what I need.”
The goal here was to create a fuel additive that can make normal gasoline replicate the performance of race fuel. Dan explained that the difference between their formula and popular other brands is the fact that the end-user is purchasing the gasoline from the station and adding their additive whereas other brands are taking stock gasoline from refineries and using their packs to bring the octane up.
So, for the end-user, you just have to make sure the blend ratio is correct. So, Race Gas’ blending guide is here to help. But, what can we mix? What does Race Gas have to offer? Race Gas offers three different products. Race Gas offers Race Gas, Race Gas Ultra, and Race Gas Diesel. All three products boost cetane and can take your traditional fuel to the next level. The Race Gas and Race Gas Ultra are for competition off-road use only and bumps octane up to 105 and 110-112. The Race Gas Diesel Products bumps cetane by 14 numbers.
