Longtime EngineLabs readers will remember this insane project, which hot-rodder Don Groff started a few years back. It began with the idea of slapping together four turbochargers to feed a custom-built V12 engine comprised of a pair of straight-six Toyota 1JZ blocks cut, machined, and welded back together to create the 120-degree V12 Toyota never imagined.
As with many projects, that initial idea was revised to incorporate a pair of turbochargers rather than the four which were envisioned in the original plan, but work has not stopped since. As with many projects, the finish line appears further and further away the longer you work on it and reexamine, revise, and reengineer the different components to fit the project’s vision.
Work has been slow going on the project–as you can see, our last update was in 2015–but Don recently reached out to tell us that he’s still pecking away at the build.
“It’s been awhile since an update but time slips by and not much new to show. Thanks to Randy Quam (Competition Engines) and Tom Protel (Cylinder Head Service), the heads got done and the short block got machined and pistons installed,” he says.
Really, there are no words to describe how awesome this thing is.
While these tasks were taking place out of the shop, Groff fired up the welder and proceeded to burn the welding wire, finishing off the chassis to get it ready for the engine.
“I tried to tie up a million loose ends including lots of leaks when I added all five fluids. Finally, a big day this week when we (thanks Ed and Steve) hauled it to Nth Moto to have a wire harness made between the computer and everything on the motor. The next big step is ignition! I hope it will be a happy day and a trip around the block,” says Don.
One thing is for sure–we’re anxiously awaiting that day. Hot-rodding lives on!
